If only the kernel.org releases with no out-of-tree drivers are Linux then it's not an OS with any significant usage in practice. Every mainstream distribution has various downstream patches to the kernel and many have out-of-tree drivers available. Most common laptop, desktop and server hardware can at least be partially used with in-tree drivers but that doesn't mean everything is often fully functional or working properly.
