There was the concept of "five types of people that can kill you", and narcissist was one of the types (the others were borderline, histrionic, sociopathic and paranoid). The author postulated that all of these dangerous types were adaptations and represent survivor types albeit that they tend to damaging extremes. But they wouldn't exist for no reason.
