Last night at writing group folks briefly talked about the housing situation, but from the perspective that the shelter I stayed in last year is bad for the local businesses, and I stayed quiet because I knew if I brought up that the shelter being so close to the library, the Y, the various grocery stores, transit access, and warm places to stay when the shelter doesn't want you in your room, if I brought that up I'd make some folks feel bad, not necessarily for the stuff they just said, but at me for having been homeless last year.
Being right in the heart of downtown was a lifesaver for me, as I imagine it is for the dozens and hundreds of folks who go through those shelter doors each year.
I wish when folks talked about these problems they instead of talking about the main victims of bad policy we all talked about the governments and billionaires who proudly divested all of the peoples' money away from social programs and into rich peoples' pockets.
But it was writing group and I wanted to talk about writing, not the shitty shelter I needed around this time last year and how it's a bummer for the pottery-cafe next door.
