You can also hit up any chemistry or biology labs (even teaching labs) where you teach. If you put up a sign on a bulletin board that says "I will take your large chemical buckets" you might get a decent number, but the size/shape might be a bit more variable (a lot of them are a bit shorter and wider than the standard 5 gallon size). The stuff that comes in them is generally pretty innocuous even if there is some residue around (sodium chloride, sodium bicarbonate, etc, easy to rinse out with water and not a problem to go down the drain).
