See "loudness war". You compress everything more to make the track sound louder compared to others, when the peaks of course can't get any louder. It's something we should be getting past now since streaming services like Spotify (and also Youtube) use some form of normalisation and will actually lower the playback volume of tracks that have too high of a 'loudness'.
