Thanks for posting about this. I have had a problem running one piece of software which relies on the newer instructions, but otherwise Linux trucks along better than anything on my old computers. I hope that other Linux distros don't follow this path soon.
There's a tool, but you can also just grep the output of /proc/cpuinfo for whether the cpu supports avx2
