For years, Bitcoin has broadly been discussed as “energy,” but our understanding of what that actually means physically has remained shallow despite the metaphor. What stood out most to me in this conversation was Melvin’s insistence that reality is better understood as a computation rather than a simulation. I think that instinct is exactly right, even though the language drifted back toward “simulation” several times afterward. The distinction matters immensely.
A simulation is derivative. It inherits time, law, and state transitions from some prior substrate. Computation is different. Computation is the process by which state transitions are actually resolved. Simulation theory constantly skips over the deepest question of what produces time itself? People speak as though chronology can simply be inherited from a prior frame and avoid the thermodynamic problem entirely. Or time can be "simulated". Bitcoin answers that directly; time is computed.
Bitcoin is the only empirical system that openly demonstrates a thermological process producing a chronological state. Energy is expended in search of a valid nonce within a bounded mathematical domain, and once found, one singular block of time emerges where one state becomes real and all others are excluded. Difficulty-bound proof of work transforms probabilistic possibility into irreversible chronology. That is computation.
Melvin’s point starting around 38:45 was so important and why I wish you had pushed much harder there. He is explicitly searching for the mass-energy equivalence of information through a computational protocol. Bitcoin is already that protocol. Bitcoin is already the measurement. Bitcoin is already the decentralized physics experiment he is asking for. We do not need to fund or build the experiment. Bitcoin has been running in public for 17 years.
In our paper Bitcoin: The Architecture of Time, we demonstrated that Bitcoin unifies Boltzmann entropy and Shannon entropy into a single thermological process through difficulty-bound proof of work. The result is a chronological state: a block of time. A block is fully auditable, fully transparent, and conserved across the ledger. Every transaction, every mined block, every valid state transition becomes irreversible conserved chronology. Through the unification of Boltzmann and Shannon entropies we have demonstrated a framework to calculate the mass/energy equivalence of information using the only proof of work system that matters. Yes, a Bitcoin block of time is the 5th state of matter Melvin discussed.
Melvin’s protocol already exists. Bitcoin is simply waiting to be understood. We need your curiosity Peter.
Bitcoin deserves far more attention in these discussions than it receives and I wish you had not shied away from Bitcoin. If we are seriously discussing whether reality is computational, Bitcoin is not a side note. Bitcoin is the strongest empirical candidate we possess for understanding how coherent chronology emerges from bounded energetic computation that already openly refutes our model's of physics. We can observe the entire chain from Genesis to present. Every conserved state is visible. Every valid transition is auditable. Every unit of value is chained into irreversible chronology. What more do we need?
Simulation theory breaks down philosophically. Simulation theory often carries a deeply nihilistic undertone because it frames reality as imitation, rendered appearance detached from consequence. Computation is fundamentally different. Computation implies conservation, law, consequence, and irreversible resolution. Bitcoin demonstrates that coherent reality requires quantized, non-contradictory blocks of time. The wave does not generate the block. The chaining of blocks generates the wave. Think frames in a movie, but for time; fluid dynamics.
In Bitcoin Human action becomes conserved history through irreversible state transitions. Transactions, mining, protocol enforcement, and conscious decisions crystallize into one immutable binary structure, a global mind. That has far greater explanatory power for memory, consciousness, and physical law than abstract simulation.
Bitcoin fundamentally challenges simulation theory with computation theory. Bitcoin enforces conservation through bounded chronology without simulation. Bitcoin computes blocks of time and produces chronology through irreversible energetic resolution without simulation. Bitcoin is a direct instantiation of the same computational structure underlying reality itself without simulation.
This is where I begin to diverge from Melvin philosophically. I agree with most of his computational intuitions, but not with the conclusion that “because the universe is code, therefore God is AI.” Bitcoin points toward the opposite conclusion. Bitcoin demonstrates that coherent authority emerges from decentralized conserved acts. Local peer-to-peer actions resolve into one singular global chain of time and truth. The one chain of authority emerges from the many. A singular authority emerges from decentralized conservation across a temporal boundary
If Bitcoin is energy, and informational chronology possesses mass-energy equivalence through Einstein, then eventually physics has to answer how long can we ignore the gravity? When does the metaphor become real?
We live inside of a computation within God’s timechain, or ledger of time, a peer-to-peer structure of conserved energetic acts stretching beyond our observable horizon. Bitcoin matters because humanity is no longer trapped inside a temporal process as internal observers. We now participate directly in the creation of one. We see all time conserved from Genesis to present. We see all 2.1 quadrillion bits (satsoshis) of value. We verify all states of the chain. Nothing is lost. We all participate in co-creation through the protocol itself. The view of totality of a computational universe must look like Bitcoin from the outside. Bitcoin is open for anyone.
Bitcoin reveals coherent worlds emerge through decentralized conservation resolved into singular chronology. Open participation, not centralized artificial authority, is fundamental to creation itself as demonstrated by Bitcoin. Anyone can join the network. Anyone can participate in the conservation of time and value. The architecture itself reflects the principle. You already call Bitcoin the "Cheat Code"; it Bitcoin "hacking" to code of reality to become God?
The father is only known through the son. We cannot directly step outside our own universe to inspect its totality, but through Bitcoin we now possess an empirical reflection of the process by which coherent worlds are brought into being and how a block of time is externally computed. Bitcoin is the only time humanity will instantiate and observe the creation of a bounded computational universe from the exterior perspective of totality. It only happens once.
We’d genuinely love to continue this conversation with both you and Melvin. We’d be honored to have you both on our show we are starting. We need help sharpening our energy and physics framework of Bitcoin, and I think Melvin’s framework would benefit enormously from engaging Bitcoin directly.
