Writer's Digest used to carry ads from companies pleading with writers not to use their brand name in a generic sense. If you don't write "Kleenex facial tissues" & just write "hand me a kleenex," eventially judges will rule that they can't enforce your trademark. Except nobody speaks like that, so it would be stilted to write that way. Same with "xerox" & down south they say "coke" in a generic way. "What kind of coke do you want? Sprite or Pepsi or Dr. Pepper?"
