A thread on the awful scenes in Belfast. They are a reminder that how information spreads matters. Everyone has the right to freedom of expression. Protecting that right is essential in a democratic society.
But free expression does not include incitement to violence, and intentionally circulating disinformation can harm free expression rights.
And free expression of the monopolists – if it means accepting them destabilising our democracy – invites censorship and state control. (1)
