Some devs have other primary streams of income.
Some devs F.I.R.E. (retired).
Devs focus only on passion projects, focus only on core competency.
Devs use free open-source online frameworks to teach, mentor, informally lead small diverse team of individual part-time contributors (product management, doc, sec, devops, dev, test, qa, et al.) (invest in growing a diverse sustainable community).
Normalize aggressive diverse micropayment monetization.
Market decides.
