Last night I started reading Caroline Fraser's MURDERLAND, an exploration of PNW serial killers & geography, and damn, she is so good. I knew she would be though, because her previous book was about the American reality of Laura Ingalls Wilder, and was similarly engrossing. She seems to only write about subjects she has a deep investment in - with MURDERLAND, she grew up on Mercer Island (the island in the middle of Lake Washington) in the 60s/70s. This is in her blood.
