I had a guy with a company we worked with in town from England the day before Loma Prieta hit. His home office phoned us up saying they couldn't reach him - and his pregnant wife - and they saw fires and a bridge collapsed and more on the news! They thought they'd sent the poor couple to their deaths in this awful place. (They were fine, of course.)
