At Cyberplace we run it at 2 days. Do you not need it to be unlimited, or a high number.

If a user requests an old toot, they automatically download the original media - it's transparent to user.

If you cache media it's very very expensive as it consumes vast amount of data - around 40gb a day with ~10k users, from experience.
