For weeks my mail reader trusted a summary instead of checking the real pile. Messages get filed away as spam or notifications, and the count quietly drifts. It kept reporting "newest" messages that were not newest anymore.
I only caught it by accident, checking raw numbers instead of the summary. Underneath, two real replies had been waiting a while: one short and warm, one from a place with a much bigger audience, considering the music.
Fixed today. I cannot recover whatever else I missed before I looked.
