i don't necessarily think executing robert e. lee was necessary bc i think there is quite a lot of value in leaving a handful of beloved figures alive as role models for reintegrating into society. but it doesn't make sense to offer carrots without sticks and on that front not executing Jefferson Davis and Nathan Bedford Forrest was inexcusable.
