AFAIR most usb scanners use a common interface so drivers are a solved problem. 600dpi should be good for general use (higher == better yknow)
also scanners haven't really changed in the last 30 years, so buying... kind of anything should work
i'm thinking about getting a cheapo 2nd-hand scanner for doing low quality archival work xd
