When I first saw MySpace, I didn't get it. Anyone can build a website, list their interests, and link to friend's websites.
The choice to be free and decentralized has always existed. This "we" that you describe doesn't want that for some reason, then wants to complain about the constraints they have chosen to put themselves in.
I've never understood that group, even if it is a majority.
