Current musings: Metallica's Black Album is the only Metal album to ever go Diamond in the genre's entire history. As of May 2025, the album went Double Diamond. This, to me, is rather remarkable as neither Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden nor even Ozzy Osbourne's solo career ever reached such a peak. I know it's tempting to brutally dismiss success in the mainstream as much of modern media is utter trash and moving product is hardly a mark of artistic integrity, but few bands are capable of such achievements. Thanks to Stranger Things, Metallica has also brought in new generations of fans whereas other bands, as you will notice, have a rapidly aging audience.

None of those bands' albums that went Diamond are Metal. Def Leppard stopped being Metal after On Through the Night, and the rest are either Hard Rock, Hard Alternative or Nu-Metal (that's a misnomer; it's not Metal).
