I've whacked myself with my club and with my mace. It isn't as bad as you fear. The movements don't have you swinging at yourself like swinging a hammer at a nail. It will be a glancing blow when you inevitably do. I'm not saying it's fun but I've never hit myself hard enough to end a workout early.
