I can see arguments for both approaches.

A true representation of the actual magazine is nice, and gives a feeling closer to the actual paper when you're reading it. There's less chance of details being obscured by the processing, too.

But the brightened version is much better for use on ereader devices with E Ink (or other ePaper) displays - avoids a muddy grey background, makes the text a lot clearer.
