I adhere to the server character limit, so just to take your second point; functionally mandatory union memberships are ABSOLUTELY still a thing in many places in the US; namely, everywhere that isn't a "right to work" state. You might say "Oh, you're only required to pay dues, you don't HAVE to be a member!" So, you're required by law to take the bad part of the deal and not the "good" part of the deal? Hmmm.
