Being able to tell demanding customers no is one of the (few) reasons I liked owning my own business.

Sometimes, not super often, customers need to be told no.

We encouraged employees to trust their instincts and say no when they felt that was right.

This can be extremely difficult for many people to do. Some found it stressful, and some found it therapeutic.

The customers who couldn't handle being told no were asked not to return.

Surprisingly (or maybe not?), this did not affect our bottom line as far as I could tell. And our employees felt empowered to do what is right.

That said, I knew many business owners that were desperate for any cash flow to meet their obligations. They were absolutely terrified to jeopardize their income. The demanding customers know this and exploit it expertly.
