They're considered to be separate illnesses in part because they are likely to have been caused by different pathogens: EBV for ME/CFS, Covid for Long Covid, etc. Even what people think of as polio is probably "long polio".

Some might be different presentations caused by the same virus, but most aren't. Even if they were, there are some syndromes that are differentiated by presentation even when they have the same underlying cause.
