Can someone tell me what these notifications mean on Linux? They show a number but I have no idea what it means.

Especially for Thunderbird - This shows a "1" even if the app isn't running. When it is running, it always shows "1", even when reading email.

Is this just a Gnome thing? Linux in general? Is it Thunderbird?
