I think people should continue to be paid to work if they want to and they are able. I do think it'd important that we end the system of senior researchers directing research and instead move to one where they're considered valuable advisors to autonomous researchers. As long as the advice doesn't have to be followed. At the moment, the most senior scientists are the ones I'd be least likely to go to for advice because if I had a good research idea they'd be the ones in the best possible position to put their team on it and publish first, and with the most incentive to do so. This is the opposite of how it should be.
