To be honest, I think the users were just that stupid. Apparently a lot of idiots were running scraping tools on the website nonstop. I used a scraping tool myself at one point, completely ignoring how bad that is for the site. Still, it was pretty noble of the owner not to flood the website with useless captchas or even paywalls, but that comes with a price when the relationship is one-sided.
