I think it started as a noble idea in Greece (if they really invented democracy, or were just the first to name it).
For instance in Switzerland, they have this direct democracy system down to the canton level to see who gets citizenship, if memory serves correctly.
As the government can architect the plan for society, those who are members of the society and subject to the government ought to have some say in how that society is built, as much as builders can ignore some of the lesser details of an architect's plan, if only to make the plan more successful.
Be that as it may, I am not so naive as to ignore the presence of retards misusing democracy to destroy their own society.
