Then they came for the Catholics,
and I didn’t speak up,
because I was a Protestant.

and by that time there was no one
left to speak up for me.

There are events in the past that we can study, and some very relevant contemporary situations, plural, that contain an element of mass deportation and imprisonment. It's bad, but I don't think I have any chance of explaining it to the person I'm replying to.
