What you say is reasonable, but:
1) Normally people are somewhat robust to this.
2) Material quality of life has been dropping since the 1980s, so if that was true you'd expect suicide rates to start rising earlier rather than starting at 2000-ish.
There are poorer countries with lower suicide rates. Material wealth is not the best explanation of this trend.
