The web publishers pissed in the soup about 25 years ago, as soon as everyone got some kind of broadband rather than dial up.
They wanted *more* revenue and started actively working with the adtech companies.
I also noticed on mobile apps where its harder to block ads, that companies using online advertising are those with sketchier business operations and customer service.
Also most mobile sites are unusable without an adblocker, ads are set up to interrupt the content on a relatively small screen..
When/if the entire adtech economy collapses, I don't think a great deal will be lost, we will still be able to buy groceries and tech and car parts (I do have some sympathy for some young folk with "online creator" careers, but these didn't exist 30 years ago)
