One more thing ds2 has going for it is that the bearer of the curse is smarter than the ashen one or the chosen undead because he doesn't burn himself to death and he killed the burnt ivory king which while not the strongest boss in the series is the strongest according to the lore because the ashen one and the chosen undead wouldn't be able to even enter his area without dying instantly.
