Getting started, picking a server:
Not many folks know that you don't need a Mastodon account to see where interesting Fediverse conversations are focused, and get a quick check of the vibe of the local servers they're using.
One can go to a big well-connected server like mastodon.social without creating an account, without logging in, and do a search on, say, #FiberArts (or #FibreArts) or #Crafts, etc.
Then just take a look at the users and toots that pop up, and check out *their* servers. One doesn't need an account to read their policies and check their live local feeds to get the vibe (I realize that's not a substitute for a trusted unbiased assessment, but it's perhaps useful).
