It's celebrated in July to commemorate the passing of the Americans with Disabilities Act, which only happened in 1990 so I was old enough to remember the disabled march on Washington that ended with people crawling up the Capitol steps to demonstrate the inaccessibility of so much of society.
The photos are really striking. I still get goosebumps just thinking about it.
Police arrested over a hundred people for this, many in their wheelchair.
