Middle East historian Fawaz Gerges on what the Iran war has left Trump with, and what it is costing everyone else.
His argument: after everything the US and Israel have dropped on Iran, Iran is hurting but still standing, so Trump has no effective military option and the only way out is a diplomatic deal that is still far off. He says the top US general warned that renewed strikes would leave the US in the same place weeks later, while munitions and air defences run down.
The cost spreads well beyond the region: a permanent "no war, no peace" that is lose-lose for everyone, around 100 million people in developing countries pushed into food insecurity, economists warning of recession or worse. Trump himself called the risk a "catastrophe".
And the longer bill: if a military costing over a trillion dollars a year can't defeat a state under sanctions for 47 years, rivals will draw conclusions about American deterrence.
