Here's the however. I was disturbed by the main character being a being of magic and a Crypto-Jew. This was a common belief about Jews in this time period, and a reason for their persecution. Of course, as they do now, Christians then believed all sorcery came from their Devil. So, how can I read this historical fiction as something other than anti-Semetic? I can't really rate this well because of the unease it leaves me with.
