Scars, some well healed and some more recent, on the skin of a Gervais' beaked whale (Mesoplodon europaeus). From a distance she looked as though her skin was mottled with an almost polka-dot like pattern. The marks record moments of a life lived far beyond human eyes - parasite scars or maybe from injuries sustained in battles or play that I can only try to imagine.
