It was many many years ago - before the internet! I don't actually remember the name, only that it was the middle book in a series. Given what I was into then, it was probably a fantasy series with a mythological bent, something like The Dark is Rising trilogy, or something from C. J. Cherryh.
I didn't want to use a piece of paper, because I didn't want the librarians to realise that the book was damaged and throw it away!
