The former Treasury secretary Ken Henry offered his support for the proposal of a new gas tax during a parliamentary inquiry in Canberra examining the prospect.
Henry opened his statement by saying 'I could make this very short, and simply say just do it'. He then went on to add that gas is part of 'the natural endowment this country provides to the people of Australia' and that the only way people benefit is 'through the operation of the taxation system'.
