People like Doctorow, who write fiction (Doctorow writes SF), are often really good observers of human nature and society. So are comedians. They have to be, otherwise we wouldn't recognise ourselves in their writing. I'd trust what a writer of fiction or comedy wrote long before any utterance by a politician.
