It is a matter of definition of "alternative":
1) The ability to do roughly the same things, or
2) the possibility to open older closed format files.
File formats can be used as vendor lock ins, and are.
Compatibility with proprietary file formats such as psd is totally different from offering similar functionality as a program.
If the original manufacturer of the format decides not to open the fileformats, read/write compatibility is a bonus.
