Ancients invoked gods not as superstition but as devices of measurement.

When knowledge ran out but decisions had to be made, augurs read entrails, oracles spoke riddles, rituals anchored choices. These devices provided closure, prevented paralysis, and made decisions socially defensible.

Today, we invoke different gods: ideologies, sciences, data, even algorithms.

The function persists: to anchor choices when certainty is unattainable.
