As I stated yesterday: It strikes me that the devices we use for interacting with computers are as much defined by software as they are by hardware!
Optical mice? They compare how far to move the previous video frame it captured to match its new frame, using an algebraic shortcut known as an FFT. Still they have a lot of numbers to crunch in the mouse!
Touchscreens? They collapse the 2D runs of pixels your fingers obscure to extract touches it can clean & interpret as gestures.
