I did it without any armor and flint spears because I'm a lazy fuck. bring a couple poultice and throw all your important stuff in a chest above and you should be fine going down to 1, but anywhere gearfoot ones can spawn is good. 1 will just lower your stability the fastest.

10 flint spears should be enough to clear out a wave of them, just be quick and make sure you're not out of the center long enough for one of them to charge up a shot at you.
