[The relocation from Dam Square](https://diem25.org/the-people-vs-police-a-battle-for-public-space-and-democratic-rights/), imposed without justification, is a restriction on our right to protest. Dam Square, a recent site of police violence and a symbol of resistance, was deliberately chosen. We are thus seeing a worrying trend continue. That trend was precisely one of the reasons why we recently asked you to take to the streets tomorrow.
Criminalising the movement
The Palestinian solidarity movement faces growing criminalisation. Peaceful protesters are intimidated, assaulted, and misrepresented by the government and media.
Mayors increasingly restrict protests with little resistance. In relocating our gathering, Mayor Halsema cited vague suspicions and past “incidents” without evidence of disorder – undermining the right to protest.
Genocide in Gaza
The Dutch government continues to ignore international condemnation of Gaza’s genocide and sabotages efforts to end it. Even the July 2024 International Court of Justice ruling, confirming Israel’s violations of international law, has not changed its stance. While it claims to respect the arrest warrant for Netanyahu, it undermined the ICC by allowing Geert Wilders, the de facto Prime Minister, to visit him.
Both national and local politicians in the Netherlands continue to protect Israel. Under the influence of Israeli ministries, they continue to repeat and reinforce Israel’s propaganda story. This is unforgivable.
Peaceful protest
That is why it is important that people take to the streets tomorrow, to stand up for the Palestinians and to defend the right to protest against genocide in the Netherlands.
