I just had the same conversation about DNA barcoders that just crush up ants and beetles and sample the DNA. It's a very fast and efficient process that gets you a lot of data. You get a lot of sequences and can make a snapshot of the diversity of a site where you roughly know what you are looking at. But you don't even know anything about the animals natural history. At that point, are you even studying animals anymore? The philosophy behind it seems kind of... sad.
