The fedi has always felt impermanent to me. I joined a few instances in 2017, loved it. Took a year or so away. Returned to 3 instances shut down, 1 unmaintained, & my acct on 1 deleted (for inactivity?). All that activity, friends, follows gone
1 remaining orig acct was on a great instance that later shut down
Some impermanence was self inflicted though. Some time ago I activated auto-delete on my less popular posts here. IDK why, just it made sense at the time. I regret that now
