Power and control is definitely a large part of it, especially with males - this goes back thousands of years - it's the priest class - you seen it as far back as Egypt and Judea - always male. The evidence is right there, through the cloak of spiritualism which they hide behind - love and unity threaten control and hierarchy - once you have that, it's not given up.
