classically a hindu is someone who believes in the divinity of the vedas but personally I believe a hindu can reject most of the vedas and must only revere the three scriptures (upanishads, brahma sutra, bhagavad gita). buddhists dont believe in the vedas but they also aren't hindus imo because of non-theism and non-atmanism although buddhism has a lot of overlap with samkhya and mahayana buddhists revere some hindu aspects of divinity.
