That's false. I constantly grill people on why they believe what they do, and they almost never answer "cultural exposure." If there is nothing more to people's's points of view than subjective cultural exposure, then how are people are able to give so many reasons for their beliefs?
If interest isn't a good enough reason to seriously engage with other people's beliefs then how do you justify any of your other hobbies? I think you'll have a hard time finding a better hobby than trying to understand the thoughts and beliefs of the people around you.
