I'm not so sure it's generational, but rather geography. The cozy enclaves (as you put it) of White suburban/rural areas will make one naive of how other people/places operate. I discovered this about myself when I moved from small town USA to big city. It was a rude awakening. But we can also be quick learners. All species tend to go to a "safer haven" to birth their offspring, and that's exactly what I did by moving back to a predominantly White farm town.
